Ebook About
Carolyn Haines's Independent Bones is the next novel in the series that Kirkus Reviews characterizes as “Stephanie Plum meets the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” featuring sassy Southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney. When Dr. Alala Diakos, a visiting professor of Greek literature, comes to teach at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, it doesn't take long for controversy to follow. With her fervent feminist ideals and revolutionary leanings, she quickly earns the admiration of many—and the ire of others. During a speech in the park, in which Alala tries to organize the women of Zinnia to demand equal pay, the crowd gets unruly, with men heckling the professor. And when PI Sarah Booth Delaney finds a sniper rifle and scope in the bushes, she begins to worry that there are more than fighting words at stake.Sarah Booth calls her boyfriend, Sheriff Coleman Peters, who offers the protection of the Zinnia police department, but Alala rejects him, saying she has no use for the law or men. And when a notorious domestic abuser is found dead the next day, suspicions turn to Alala herself, who was overheard bragging that she would take him down. Tensions deepen when connections are drawn between Alala and two similar, previous deaths. But Sarah Booth doesn't want to believe Alala is a murderer, and when the professor shows up at Sarah Booth’s doorstep, asking her to find the real criminal, Sarah Booth embarks on a case stretching across the Delta. Yet Alala remains at the center of it all, and Sarah Booth can’t help but wonder if the killer has been with her all along...

Book Independent Bones: A Sarah Booth Delaney Mystery Review :

Past Sarah Delaney Booth Mystery reads had a sense of adventure and humor that made reading them relaxing and fun, but this book has political leanings spread throughout over and over that makes the enjoyment of reading it disappear. One issue I totally agree with is, it is NEVER ok for a man to put his hands on a woman in anger... EVER. But see that is the point, a reader will feel the need to clarify their political views on women’s rights, gun control, government leanings, and more. Just want the fun loving characters and plots, without agendas and teachings, to return!
I was disappointed in this book. The social focus of this book was Southern men and their attitudes toward women - particularly old-school misanthropy coupled with domestic abuse and sexual abuse/harassment. I’m okay with the independence messages that weave their way through this series, but readers are really clobbered with the socio-political message in this one. And Jitty! Her appearances were way too educational/historical and long - pulling the reader out of the story entirely in most cases. In the early days of the series, Jitty would provide Sarah with guidance and a sense of her own history. Now, it’s gone way overboard with Jitty and her assuming of identities. It’s getting really old as well. Probably still better than Jitty harping on Sarah about having babies and continuing the Delaney line, but not by much.My other big issue with this book is Tinkie and her pregnancy. I could have sworn Tinkie was a human being, but, judging by the length of her pregnancy, she surely must be an elephant! Tinkie suspected she was pregnant at the end of Game of Bones which took place in March - which would mean she conceived at least two weeks prior, so possibly late February/early March. Then she was definitely pregnant in April at Easter during The Devil’s Bones. She’s even more pregnant that following Christmas when the whole group of friends have their adventure in A Garland of Bones. Now comes Independent Bones - set in fall AFTER A Garland of Bones - and Tinkie is STILL pregnant. By my count, that’s about 18 months of pregnancy. In fact, I was really surprised to start the book and find that it was fall and Tinkie was still pregnant. Serious continuity error that an editor should have caught so that they could change the timing of the book to spring instead of fall. The mystery itself is another good one. Nice and twisty that will take you right to the end. As always, Roscoe (Harold’s rascally dog) breaks bad in many ways. Pluto is aloof and Sweetie Pie puts herself on the line for Sarah Booth. And, yet, there were so many breaks for history lectures by Jitty on independent women (not that it’s bad to highlight them, but there were just too many and they were too long) plus Tinkie, ready to burst since she’s been pregnant so dang long, riding around in a car like it’s nothing, that I really struggled to stay with the book. In fact, I’ve struggled with the last three books and had this one in my library for quite a while before finally sitting down to actually read it. So, I suppose, overall, it was disappointing. Hope things pick up in the next one.
