Beautifully written that flows smooth as silk, this was an exceptional read. Reminiscent of the classics where scenes vividly flow from the pages filled with authentic dialogue. The reader cannot help but open her heart as the pages begin with ten-year-old Rosie’s loss of her beloved mother. Before her mother died, she met with her best friend Silvia to make a request; in the event of her death she wanted Silvia to take her daughter to live with her in Sri Lanka. As if a premonition, it did come to pass in the heartbreaking events when Rosie departed from her professor father. Soon, however, she settles in the Silvia and her sons, feeling at home. But as the title of the book presages and war engulfs lives and love, loss ensues. Scenes depicting assault and trauma follow with Rosie's coming of age. Written with heart and compassion, this is an author who knows how to masterfully bring action alive. From the first pages through to the end, there wasn’t a missed beat. This is a book to be read again and again. By an author I won’t forget. Those I have Lost is a captivating coming of age journey set mostly in the area now known as Sri Lanka before, during, and after World War II. Sharon Maas once again portrays characters and settings that will leave the reader spellbound. We travel through Rosie’s life, from the loss of her mother, her new life with her mother’s wealthy friend Silvie, her joy and heartbreak, and the travesty of war.
